Surface Finishes: Improving Quality & Longevity

Selecting the correct surface finish not only enhances its parts’ and enclosures’ appearance but also improves its longevity, resistance to corrosion, and overall functionality. Whether it's for sheet metal parts, 3D- printed parts, or our standard enclosures, Mech Power provides a range of finishing options tailored to your project requirements.

Each type of finish serves a specific purpose, ranging from creating a smooth, polished appearance to providing durable protection against harsh environments. The material, intended function, and aesthetic goals all influence the selection process for the finish.

Surface Finishes in Sheet Metal Fabrication

Due to its strength, accuracy, and adaptability, Sheet metal fabrication is a highly reliable manufacturing process used in many different industries. The right surface treatment can increase aesthetic appeal, reduce wear, and improve protection.

Finishes & Material Compatibility:

1.Powder Coating (Applicable for Aluminum, Mild Steel (MS), and Stainless Steel (SS))

A dry powder coating is electrostatically applied and then cured with heat to create a protective layer. This method offers outstanding durability, resistance to corrosion, and an array of textures and finishes, including:

  1. Structured – A textured surface that improves grip and wear resistance.
  2. Textured – A lightly grainy finish that enhances grip and minimizes the visibility of flaws.
  3. Glossy – A sleek, high-gloss coating for a refined and polished appearance.
  4. Matte – A non-reflective surface that conceals fingerprints and scratches.
  5. Semi-Glossy – A finish that strikes a balance between durability and visual appeal.

2. Anodizing (Applicable for Aluminum)

Anodizing is an electrochemical process that creates a robust oxide layer on aluminum, enhancing its resistance to corrosion and increasing its hardness.

  1. Brushed  A linear textured surface achieved through abrasive brushing before the anodizing process.
  2. Bead Blasted A smooth, matte texture resulting from high-pressure glass bead blasting.
  3. Hardcoat  An additional thick anodized layer designed for enhanced wear and corrosion resistance.

3. Black Oxidizing (Applicable for Mild Steel (MS))

This chemical treatment generates a thin layer of black oxide on steel, enhancing its corrosion resistance while minimizing glare and maintaining

dimensional accuracy.

4. Chromatizing (Applicable for Aluminum)

Also known as chemical conversion coating, chromatizing enhances corrosion resistance and facilitates paint adhesion. It creates a delicate, protective chromium oxide layer without substantially changing the metal's dimensions.

Surface Finishes in 3D Printing

3D printing facilitates quick prototyping and personalized part creation, while the appropriate finishing technique ensures visual allure, durability, and smooth textures.

Finishes & Material Compatibility:

(Available for PLA, ABS, PETG, and resin-based 3D-printed components)

1. Sanding

Sanding is a manual or mechanical finishing approach that eliminates layer lines and imperfections, yielding a smooth surface prepared for painting or further processing.

 2. Painting

Tailored color finishes for 3D-printed parts, featuring options such as:

  • Glossy: A reflective high-shine surface that offers a premium look.
  • Matte: A sophisticated, non-reflective coating that highlights details and hides flaws.

Getting the Perfect Surface Finish

From improving appearance to ensuring protective properties, surface finishing is essential for product effectiveness. The right finish not only prolongs the lifespan of metal and plastic parts and enclosures but also increases scratch and corrosion resistance, as well as durability.

At Mech Power, we understand that every project has unique needs, and our extensive range of finishing options ensures that your parts and enclosures meet both technical requirements and aesthetic preferences. We ensure consistent, high-quality standards throughout the entire process, whether you need a nicely sanded 3D-printed prototype, a sturdy powder-coated enclosure, or a precisely anodized aluminum part.
